Our guide to the best drone locations to compliment your wedding film
We spend a lot of time exploring the Southern Lakes with a camera in hand and when conditions and regulations allow, a drone in the air.
Queenstown is one of the most incredible places in New Zealand to film a wedding. From Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables to Glenorchy and the surrounding high country, the landscape gives wedding films an incredible sense of place and beauty!
We wanted to put together a quick list of some of our favourite spots to fly a drone when embarking on a helicopter photo shoot. If you're planning a Queenstown elopement or wedding and you don't see your chosen location on this list, there's a good chance there are restrictions around flying a drone there due to the controlled airspace and aviation activity around Queenstown Airport.
If drone footage is really important to you, have a look through these locations and possibly chat with your planner about whether a location change could give you more options. Or, of course, get in touch with us and we can discuss what drone options might be available for your day.
If you're looking for something a little more wild and remote, Lake Erskine is absolutely worth the extra journey. It's a little further from Queenstown than some of our other favourite helicopter locations, but once you get there, you'll understand why.
Tucked away in the South Island high country, Lake Erskine is surrounded by rugged mountains, alpine tussock and that incredible glacial blue water. It feels properly remote. Like you've left New Zealand entirely and landed somewhere in another world.
It's an amazing option for an adventurous Queenstown elopement or intimate wedding, especially if you want something that feels completely different from the more popular locations closer to Queenstown.
The extra flight time does come at a cost, but if you're after epic landscapes, privacy and some seriously incredible drone footage, we'd say it's well worth the journey.

If you want that classic “holy shit, we’re actually here” feeling, Coromandel Peak is hard to beat.
Sitting high above Lake Wānaka on the Mt Roy ridgeline, Coromandel Peak gives you huge panoramic views across the lake, surrounding mountains and towards Mt Aspiring. It’s a helicopter only location, which makes the whole experience feel pretty bloody special. Surrounded by nothing but mountains, sky and one seriously incredible view.
For wedding films, it’s one of our favourite locations because there’s so much to work with. You can capture huge aerial landscapes and sweeping drone shots that really show just how small you are amongst the Southern Alps. The ridge itself also gives us plenty of options for more intimate, low-flying shots around you.
It’s roughly a 15–20 minute helicopter flight from Queenstown, making it an easy addition to a Queenstown elopement or helicopter photo shoot.
And honestly, it’s one of those places where the footage almost films itself. Big mountains, deep blue water, dramatic ridgelines and hopefully a bit of golden light - what's not to love?

Perched high above Lake Whakatipu between Mount Crichton and Mount Larkins, Big Geordie offers a spectacular aerial perspective across Glenorchy, the lake’s distinctive islands and the rugged peaks of the Humboldt Mountain Range.
For drone cinematography, this elevated vantage point delivers a striking mix of turquoise water, golden tussock, dramatic rocky ridgelines and layered alpine landscapes. Sweeping reveals across the lake and towards the mountains make it an excellent setting for cinematic establishing shots, expansive landscape sequences and footage that captures the scale and remoteness of the Wakatipu region.
Particularly beautiful at sunset with perfect backlight across the lake. Big Geordie offers a distinctive perspective on one of Otago’s most iconic landscapes, with plenty of natural contrast and depth to work with.
One of my absolute favourites!

If you want to get properly up into the Remarkables without travelling too far from Queenstown, Double Cone is an absolute cracker.
Perched high above the Remarkables, this is the kind of location that gives you those huge alpine landscapes without needing a long helicopter flight. You’re surrounded by rugged peaks, rocky ridgelines and dramatic mountain scenery, with Queenstown and the surrounding landscape stretching out below.
It’s also a great option for couples wanting to combine a helicopter landing with drone footage. Double Cone sits just outside the Queenstown controlled airspace
